Appreciation

Let's agree on this: Most of us are bankrupt when it comes to smiling or acknowledging others. We rarely appreciate the small acts of kindness happening around us.

Someone in a queue who lets you go first, the driver who slows down to let you cross the road safely, the cleaning staff at your office who keeps your workspace tidy, delivery personnel who handle packages carefully, or someone who offers their seat at the public transport without waiting to be asked. These are small, everyday gestures that get unnoticed sometimes.

And I confess, these are not any random examples, I’m just recalling the moments when I’ve been stingy myself.

When you think about it with empathy, imagine someone appreciating you. Even a small “hey, this was really nice” or “your words made me think” can push you forward. Appreciation doesn’t cost anything, but it can mean a lot to the person receiving it. A small gesture can brighten someone’s day, boost their confidence, or keep them going in something they’re trying to build.

So I’m starting to remind myself: if someone’s effort, presence, or words add something positive to my life - even for a second - I should let them know. We don’t lose anything by appreciating others. But we might help someone gain something: encouragement, clarity, motivation, or simply the warm feeling of being acknowledged.

On a final note, practicing what I preach: a small appreciation to ChatGPT for helping me frame these thoughts!!!
